How to Keep the Faith and Grow your Confidence as a Virtual Assistant

Katie Tew • July 10, 2023

As a Virtual Assistant, confidence is a big component to your success. It empowers you to showcase your skills, build strong client relationships, and take on new challenges. However, it's really common to experience moments of self-doubt and imposter syndrome...

Let’s talk about imposter syndrome – we’ve all struggled with it at one time or another right? It’s very common in our line of work to lack confidence in our ability to run our business and show up for our clients, providing that all important, seamless service to multiple people at any one time.  But rest assured, nearly everyone in life faces these challenges in lacking confidence and it’s not exclusive to any one industry. It affects many professionals, regardless of their field. Acknowledging that imposter syndrome is a shared experience among many different people from all walks of life can help normalise and mitigate its effects.

  • To help you develop self confidence, make sure you recognise and celebrate your achievements. Take time to acknowledge what you have accomplished so far and the skills you have acquired. Keep a record of positive feedback and testimonials from clients to remind yourself of how capable you are.

  • Keep learning! Invest in your professional development by staying updated on industry trends, attending webinars or workshops, and expanding your skillset. The more knowledge you acquire, the more confident you’ll feel in providing value to your clients.

  • Set yourself realistic goals: break down your larger goals into smaller, achievable milestones. As you reach each milestone, your confidence will grow, giving you motivation to move on to bigger challenges.

  • To help you support your clients with confidence, make sure you understand their business. Before meeting a client or prospective client, research their industry and familiarise yourself with their business challenges. This will help you to ask relevant questions and provide valuable insights during a discovery call.

  • Prepare a script: create a list of questions and talking points for a discovery call. Having a well prepared script will help you feel more confident and ensure that you gather all the information you need to understand exactly what your client is looking for in terms of support.

  • Make sure to really listen to your prospective client’s concerns and requirements. Show empathy, ask follow up questions and take notes. By demonstrating a genuine interest in their business, you’ll give them confidence in your abilities and help to build a stronger, authentic client relationship.

  • When addressing client confidence challenges; always be clear when it comes to expectations. Communicate your services, availability and timeframes to set realistic expectations from the very outset. This transparency is key to help clients feel confident in your abilities and trust your professionalism.

  • Offer testimonials and case studies: share success stories and positive feedback from previous clients to show your expertise.

  • Regular progress updates: keep clients informed about the progress of tasks set and projects given. Regular communication builds trust and confidence in your work.

Growing your confidence as a Virtual Assistant is an ever evolving process that requires self-awareness, self-belief, and continuous improvement. Remember, imposter syndrome affects professionals across industries, and you are not alone in facing it. By implementing strategies to boost your confidence, understanding your clients' challenges, and providing exceptional support, you'll not only excel in your role but also help your clients overcome their own confidence hurdles. Embrace your skills, cultivate a growth mindset, and watch your confidence soar as you navigate the Virtual Assistant world with assurance and success.
