Even in 2022, most people still don't really know the full extent of what a Virtual Assistant does, or just how valuable and crucial to an organisation or corporate individual they really are. VAs don't just touch type, take phone calls and process invoices; they are sounding boards, cheerleaders, the quiet heroes of administration and the dreaded to do list. They are strategic, efficient, supportive, build effective relationships and experts in organisation, time saving and prioritisation. They turn ideas into processes and visions into achievable goals.
Being a Virtual Assistant is a fulfilling, well-paid career route and shouldn't be viewed as a stepping stone onto something 'better'. There are infinite possibilities and routes to go down as Virtual Assistant; having the option to carve out a specialised niche or developing your skills in an area you are particularly passionate about. It gives you career autonomy and the chance to develop a career path that you truly feel is for you and serves your strengths.
There are boundaries, limits and expectations you can set as a VA. Honest, open and clear communication with your clients is key to a successful business relationship. The client should feel important and a priority at all times, however it is perfectly reasonable and essential right from the start to state clear working patterns, availability and the services you will be providing.
Being a Virtual Assistant can be lonely and isolating at times. Working remotely and not within an immediate physical team can be challenging. Make sure to schedule in regular Zoom calls with your clients and members of their organisation - you are a part of their business. Being an active part of the ever growing Virtual Assistant community, where you can share tips, tricks, support each other and bounce ideas off your peers will benefit you greatly as well.
Being a Virtual Assistant is more than a worthwhile profession; it's a valid, lifelong career choice and I feel privileged to be a part of this community and to help others realise their dream and ambition of growing a successful VA business.
